Vida Downtown Dubai, The Mine Gallery Collab With Yasuaki Onishi

Reverse Volume Art Installation by Yasuaki Onishi

Reverse Volume 1

Vida Downtown Dubai to unveil its second edition of #ArtInVida in collaboration with The Mine Gallery; an installation entitled REVERSE VOLUME. This is in line with the Middle East’s largest Art and Design Fairs, Art Dubai and Design Days.

This installation which will be unveiled on March 16 and which will be stretched till the month of April, will make the lobby of this boutique hotel even more attractive.

Reverse Volume, the intricate yet monumental mountain-like structure, which appears to float in space in the hotel lobby, is made up of unexpected rudimentary materials. The artist uses plastic sheeting and black hot glue in a process he calls “casting the invisible” which involves the dressing of the plastic sheeting over stacked cardboard boxes, which are then removed to leave only their impressions. This process of “reversing” sculptures is Onishi’s reflection on the nature of the negative space. The molded form occupies the space and envelops the viewer who is invited to experience the installation by way of either walking beneath the sculpture or around it.

The collaboration aims at promoting artistic dialogue and supporting the works of emerging artists in the region.

With my 6-year-old son Ilori who is into art, together we’ll get to know in person, the artist’s reflection on the nature of the negative space.
